Felix van Groeningen (The Broken Circle Breakdown) and his wife and co-writer/director Charlotte Vandermeersch capture something honest and inscrutable about straight male friendship (and some spectacular scenery!) in their lovely but meandering adaptation of Paolo Cognetti's novel about two men from different backgrounds who meet as boys during summer in the Italian Alps and remain close despite the divergent paths their natures and circumstances take them.
