This holiday-adjacent romcom stars David Niven as a stuffy bishop frustrated by his failed efforts to raise money for his new cathedral. When he asks heaven for guidance, he is immediately visited by a debonair man named Dudley (Cary Grant), who claims to be an angel. The bishop is skeptical, then annoyed when Dudley ingratiates himself into the household as his assistant and wins the attentions of the titular bishop's wife (Loretta Young). The charming cast isn't quite up to the task of breathing It's a Wonderful Life style magic into this stiff and often saccharine fantasy premise.
