Philip Seymour Hoffman’s only foray into directing for the screen is this uninspired adaptation of the wonderful play he starred in off-Broadway in 2007 written by Robert Glaudini and directed by Peter Dubois. The character study about endearing if dysfunctional New Yorkers, reunites the original stage cast of Hoffman, John Ortiz, and Daphne Rubin-Vega, with Amy Ryan taking over for Beth Cole, but opens the play up in ways that shrink its power rather than expanding it. Dialogue that felt alive on stage feels stilted on screen.
