Small Axe is an anthology film series created, co-written, and directed by Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Widows, Shame). Each film tells a story about the lives of West Indian immigrants in London during the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. Some are based on actual people and events; others are historical fiction.

Mangrove, the first and most epic of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology, brings to life the 1971 trial of the Mangrove Nine, which exposed systemic racism within London's Police. A few odd narrative choices in terms of what's explored and what seems casually dropped in, but passionate performances and fascinating period detail make it unmissable.
