A Royal Affair is one of those terrific historical fictions that don’t get made much these days; free of cuteness and the standard BBC “dress-up” qualities and full of good, old-fashioned storytelling via its strong script and excellent cast. It is the true story of a queen who falls for a common man and together they start a revolution. All the characters are fascinating and relatable as they scheme and plot and double-cross. By the end we are deeply invested in their fates.
