This Spanish homage to the silent European cinema of
the 1920s is quite effective at recreating the look and feel of films from that
era, but falls into the trap of being more concerned with recreating a specific
visual style than finding new meaning in an old story. The achievement in
creating a silent film a full century after the invention of talkies never
rises above gimmick level. That said, this modern update of the Snow White
fairytale set in Seville, with most of the main characters as bullfighters--including
the dwarfs!--is well cast, well shot and has a wonderful flamenco-inspired
musical score by Alfonso de Vilallonga.
