Actress Vera Farmiga’s (The Departed, Up In The Air) directorial début is a thoughtful and unbiased look at faith and religion in America.  The film is never condescending or simpleminded and it does a good job conveying the appeal and strength of faith-based communities.  The story explores the struggle with doubt that all intelligent people who believe must face at some point. The movie succeeds because it is less a detached exploration of religion and more an involving character study about the quest for the meaning of life.
