This portrait of a corrupt police officer begs comparison to the original 1992 Bad Lieutenant by Able Ferrara--a similarly relentless showcase for an actor who isn’t quite the master thespian many consider him. The film moves from one dark, depressing, violent set of circumstances to another as we watch this character become more and more self-destructive. What does it have to say about the police? About society? Not too much. Where as Moverman’s previous film, the terrific 2009 Iraq War drama The Messenger presented an original take on the effects of war from a totally fresh perspective, this film is a one-note character study that is riddled with cop-gone-bad clichés instead of incite.
