Blind Love

Ariel Lin stars as a mother in an unhappy marriage who reconnects romantically with an enigmatic woman from her past (Ke-Xi Wu). The already tense family dynamics, which seem less shaped by love and more structured around her surgeon husband's (Frederick Lee) need for prosperous image maintenance, become even more complicated when her rebellious son (Jimmy Liu) also develops an attraction to the same woman. Director Mei-Yu "Julian" Chou and writer River Wu weave an interesting tonal tapestry, veering from earnest melodrama almost into broad farce. It doesn't all work smoothly (I'm still unclear how the thematic eye stuff fits in narratively), and at 2 hours and 25 minutes it's maybe a tad long for this subject matter. However, this running time allows for a lot of quiet introspection, and most of the characters are quite compelling.
