Polish octogenarian writer/director Jerzy Skolimowski (Le Départ, Hands Up, Four Nights With Anna) reworks, Robert Bresson’s beloved Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) giving viewers a fresh donkey's eye view of humanity. We follow the braying, circus performer as he embarks on a road-movie-style trek across the Polish and Italian countryside. What he sees in us humans, even those that are kind to him, isn't especially appealing, especially with all the red strobe lights we seem obsessed with flashing. He also seems keenly aware of things he doesn't actually witness, like an extended cameo by Isabelle Huppert, and his POV occasionally shifts to that of a high-speed drone for no apparent reason. I guess that's how we update the austerity of Bresson these days.
