Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway success, the Tony Award-winning musical about three days in the life of a NY Dominican-American city block, is brought to the screen by Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2, Step Up 3D, Crazy Rich Asians) and screenwriter Quiara Alegría Hudes (who wrote the book for the show). The filmmakers put together a fine cast but make a number of questionable changes meant, I suppose, to open up the show and make it feel more contemporary, but have the effect of making this modest but thrillingly vibrant stage musical seem smaller, unfocused, and some times stultified on the big screen.
