Denzel Washington broods masterfully as a haunted old-school deputy sheriff who teams up with a young detective (Rami Malek) to catch a serial killer. John Lee Hancock sets his sombre police procedural in the 1990s when his script was originally written, and the film would have certainly played better if made 30 years ago. Dark, twisty, morally-ambiguous thrillers about the internal turmoil of cops who form an unlikely bond and cover-up for each other feel very out of step today.
