In her directorial debut, TV actor Justine Bateman gives us the story of a 32-year old film executive (Olivia Munn) who makes all her life and career decisions based on the crushing fear of doing the wrong thing. The devices used—the constant voice-over of the titular Violet's doom-spewing inner voice, her true thoughts spelt out for us via super-imposed text, and flashback glimpses to her childhood—should reduce this picture to a highfalutin gimmick movie. But Munn (and Bateman) somehow manage a central performance that shines through and enhances the external to create a dimensional character full of mystery and ultimately empathy.
