Congolese rap star Baloji makes his directorial debut with this family drama that plays like a supernatural horror movie. Marc Zinga stars as Koffi, a man from a village in the Congo who was disowned by his mother when he was young because of a birthmark that branded him a sorcerer. Now living in Europe with his pregnant white Belgian fiancee, Alice (Lucie Debay), he visits his family to honor a tradition. Though he's prepared Alice for the ancient rituals and superstitions they will encounter, things are a bit more intense than either of them expects. When he reconnects with his younger sister, Tshala (Eliane Umuhire), who has also left the village for a more Western lifestyle, the narrative splits and then doubles back and forth in unexpected directions. It's not always the easiest film to follow, at least for someone who doesn't speak French or Swahili, but the characters are always compelling, and the movie looks great.
